Terms in Computer Architecture

The following is a list of terms used in computer architecture.

Accumulator: It is a tri-state 8-bit register.
Analog – A representation of a physical continuous quantity. An analog voltage or current can have any value within a defined range.

Digital: A representation of a physical quantity by a series of binary numbers.
A digital representation can have only specific discrete values.

Instruction Format: The layout of the instruction is called instruction format

Logic level: A voltage level that represents a defined digital state in an electronic circuit.

Logic LOW: Logic 0. The lower of two voltages in a digital system with two logic levels

Logic HIGH: Logic 1. The higher of two voltages in digital system with two logic levels

Positive Logic: A system in which logic LOW represents binary digit 0 and logic HIGH represents binary digit 1.

Negative Logic: A system in which logic LOW represents binary digit 1 and logic HIGH represents binary digit 0.

Machine code: Sequence of instructions in machine language
Machine language: Numeric version of instructions

PC: Program Counter. It is a register acting as pointer to the next instruction
